Doing burden-sharing right to deliver natural climate solutions for carbon dioxide removal

چکیده
Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) figures prominently in modelled pathways to achieve the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming 1.5-2°C compared pre-industrial levels. However, national roles and responsibilities deliver CDR have been informed with quota analyses that focus on developed economies major emitters. This study extends discussion implications for developing countries. For purpose, we employ a diverse set allocation methods wide range emissions scenarios address equitability uncertainty sharing burden climate change mitigation. We further tropical countries due their large potential natural solutions (NCS) CDR. Our analysis indicates stringent quotas top seven contribute ∼60% pantropical cost-effective NCS potential, median across ranging from 0.1-29 GtCO2. results reveal strong heterogeneity inherent bias making agreement an ‘equitable’ unlikely. Competition among non-NCS options may arise when ambitious are implemented vast forest areas or expansion tree cover. Therefore, it is important not use evaluate actions inform targets could exacerbate trade-offs between reduction, biodiversity ecosystem services these NCS-rich Instead, burden-sharing exercises foster higher ambition if used voluntary cooperation mechanisms. Discrepancy perceived fairness should be critically transparently embraced encourage acknowledgment socio-ecological co-benefits as compensation. Such approach will allow prioritise protection restoration nature mitigation pathways.

Selective Removal of Carbon Dioxide from Aqueous Ammonia Solutions
In this work modelling and experimental validation of an integrated process for the removal of carbon dioxide from ammonia solutions is presented (decarbonisation). In this process, carbon dioxide is stripped out from the solution simultaneously with small amounts of ammonia at ambient pressure in a packed column. Recovery of the stripped ammonia can be reached by combining absorption of ammoni...
متن کاملNatural solutions to climate change
Fifty years ago, humans harboured the hubristic idea that they could alter the weather and climate to their advantage, perhaps to prevent future ice ages or to induce rainfall in drought-stricken regions. these high-flying hopes were eventually doused by reality; today, we have the more humble objective of merely keeping the climate stable—in particular, mitigating the impact of greenhouse gase...
متن کاملCollateral transgression of planetary boundaries due to climate engineering by terrestrial carbon dioxide removal
The planetary boundaries framework provides guidelines for defining thresholds in environmental variables. Their transgression is likely to result in a shift in Earth system functioning away from the relatively stable Holocene state. As the climate system is approaching critical thresholds of atmospheric carbon, several climate engineering methods are discussed, aiming at a reduction of atmosph...
متن کاملIs atmospheric carbon dioxide removal a game changer for climate change mitigation?
The ability to directly remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere allows the decoupling of emissions and emissions control in space and time. We ask the question whether this unique feature of carbon dioxide removal technologies fundamentally alters the dynamics of climate mitigation pathways. The analysis is performed in the coupled energyeconomy-climate model ReMIND using the bioenergy with C...
